The works of 11 Big Island artists are among 57 pieces selected for inclusion in Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2018.

This is the sixth triennial occurrence of MACC’s signature statewide juried art competition and exhibition. Schaefer Portrait Challenge works can be viewed in the center’s Schaefer International Gallery from Jan. 16 to March 18.

Artists from Hawaii Island, Oahu, Maui, Lanai and Kauai submitted their interpretations of portrait subjects, including self-portraits. The artists submitted works in two- and three- dimensions through a variety of media and methods: paint, pastel, graphite, watercolor, stone, clay, wood or mixed media.

Big Island artists and their portraits selected for the challenge are:

• Rose Adare, “Threshold”

• Ken Charon, “Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng Sowing Seeds of Peace”

• Mae Desmond, “The Water Bearer”

• Ingrid Frégeau, “Long Live Love”

• Boots Lupenui, “Eric Lindsey, Hawaiian Cowboy”

• Gerald Murai, “Tomas Belsky & Gerald Murai”

• Thu Nguyen, “Trade Wind Day”

• Joseph Okonek, “Windward Fighter”

• Kaylie Pickup, “Mae Mae”

• Patrick Daniel Thomas Sarsfield, “Patrick Daniel Thomas Sarsfield Artist 1937”

• Paul F. Yount, “ME”

The jurors for the challenge were Charles Cohan of Oahu, Carol Bennett of Kauai and Jennifer Owen of Maui. The jurors looked for confidence in an applied fine art technique and the artist’s ability to move the viewer emotionally or psychologically, revealing their subject’s inner spirit or essence.

SPC carries two substantial cash prizes, the $15,000 Jurors’ Choice Award, to be announced during the opening reception Jan. 14, and the $5,000 Marian Freeman People’s Choice Award, with the winner to be announced during a separate reception in March.
